Flagship Outlet of Bali’s Legendary Coffee

A popular coffee shop on Sanur’s end of Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, Kopi Bali House is the flourishing offshoot of Kopi Bali, the island’s top coffee producer and distributor of the famous Butterfly Globe brand. A tall three-level shop in a small business complex, the ‘house’ offers an oasis in the cosy interiors of its restaurant and café, serving Western and Indonesian fare for breakfast, lunch and dinner, alongside cakes, pastries, quick munchies and a coffee-orientated drinks list.

Its upper level café also has a gallery where you can admire life-size surreal coffee paintings.

You can’t miss the spot on your way to Kuta or the airport from Sanur; it stands out from the rest of the complex with its large round signage and unusual front design – glass windows with two slanted towering pillars. Step inside and you will find cool modern settings with a cold pastry display as its centrepiece, offering ‘cakes of the day’ and other one-off delights. A combination of plush black leather sofas and square tables provide a sleek combination, and outside the perimeter are shaded setups that welcome smokers and those opting for al fresco seating.The café’s interior is filled with décor hailing Indonesia’s coffee heritage, from old roasters to antique strainers, and labels that allude to the founding family’s legendary Butterfly Globe brand (known to locals as Kopi Bubuk Cap Kupu-Kupu Bola Dunia). Upstairs are more stylish settings, and the coffee gallery is well presented with the artworks of Indonesian coffee painter Rudy Sri Handoko, adorning the walls with his fine surreal sketches depicting Indonesian life. Here you can look at samples of the world’s most expensive coffee, ‘civet coffee’ known as kopi luwak. A barista behind a mini coffee bar readily helps you with preparation and servings, as well as with insightful background and knowledge on the various products available.

Gourmet Coffee and Dining

 Kopi Bali House is all about coffee, and you’ll find a long roll of selections on the drink list, from hot, icy to frozen. You’ll also find familiar espressos, lattes and mochachinos, but you might want to explore further with the other innovative, exotically named items. The ‘exotic bubble’, ‘blue legend’, raspberrian, or the avocado coffee, for instance, are all cooling delights that are slight twists on the common milkshake and smoothie. Outside the caffeine selection, you may also go for Kopi Bali’s equally refreshing ‘fruit bubbles’ that come with boba pearls and in fruity flavours of avocado, cranberry, blueberry, mango and kiwi.

By continuously adding new items to their menu, Kopi Bali House presents a range of East and West to cater to various palates. While in Bali, why not go for Indonesian favourites that the culinary team here has enhanced, such as the chef’s special nasi campur or Indonesian mixed rice dish, which presents a plate of satay sticks, chicken strips, prawn crackers, stir-fried water spinach and peanut sauce encircling a dome of steamed white rice topped with fried onions. Another local favourite is the traditional tipat cantok comprising mixed rice cake slices with sprouts and snake bean cuts in peanut sauce dressing, offering a symphony of sweet and sour in every bite.

On the Western side, try out the salsa di tuna: a tuna steak that sits on top of potato wedges swathed in juicy salsa dressing, or the barbecue beef sandwich that includes barbecue sauced beef strips with tomato, cucumber and onion between two homemade French loaves, served with fries. If you don’t have much time on your hands, or just dropping in, quick bites to accompany your mochachino or fruity bubble include rissoles, banana or chocolate chip muffins, brownies or any other pick from the ‘cake of the day’. For any other free time, slump down into one of the leather sofas at front as your selections come served while you enjoy your unfinished read.

 Staff members are professional and well-trained, and have good knowledge about the coffee and food selections. The spot has become increasingly popular since its opening in 2003, with its small parking space usually packed during dining hours. It’s more convenient to get in and out by taxi. Drivers know the spot well, and calling for one from the cafe is easy as hailing for one outside.
